Currently, only Illinois and Kansas offer online, state-specific trapper education courses that address the regulations and species found in the state (check back for new state courses soon).

Trappers from other states are welcome to take either of these free courses to learn a lot about trapping and/or to prepare for a trapper education course in their state. However, the certification earned in the Illinois and Kansas online courses are only valid in Illinois and Kansas. if your state requires trapper education certification, check with your state wildlife agency for course requirements and availability.

In Illinois, first-time trappers born on or after Jan 1, 1998, must pass a trapper education course before they are allowed to buy a trapping license. Additionally, any trapper, regardless of age, who has not previously held a valid trapping license issued by this state or another within the 3 years preceding application, is required to complete a trapper education course before purchasing a license. The best way to receive the necessary certification is to take an in-person trapper education course from an instructor (

However, if you cannot find an in-person course near you, you may complete the certification through this online course. After successful completion of the online course, you will be able to print a certificate that allows you to buy your trapping license.

Persons born on or after July 1, 1966 must complete the course before harvesting furbearers in the state on lands other than their own. This online course meets the furharvester education requirement (K.S.A. 32-912) in Kansas. When you complete each of the lessons below and pass the final exam, you will receive your Kansas furharvester education certification.
